When first starting, always remember that everything you learn and try is a stepping stone for your next level. Then, you have your punches that will be learned in a form of basics (kihon) and, after that, you learn the forms of self-defence from your fighting stance. This style also practises upper block, side block, and lower block to begin with, all trained with the technique of straight-line movement. Like all other styles the forms of kicking will be front kick (mai giri) and roundhouse kick (mawashi giri) for beginners.Īs a beginner, you start learning these stances first as they will directly impact what you learn next. In addition, these are the first stances you will need to learn as they will become the foundation of your training. With this style, there is a lot of 45 degree footwork and you often bend into stances without the knee reaching over the foot position. This style of karate was developed from Kenwa Mabuni and focuses on three major stances – long stance (which is known as Zenkutso Daci), Cat stance (Nekoashi daci) and Horse Stance (shico daci). Next, let’s check out each style including what the stances look like to give you an understanding of what style best fits you. For instance, my personal favorite, Shito Ryu, is the most unique in its stance and movements. I would highly recommend that you research each style of movement in order to choose what you feel most comfortable with. Each style, in other words, has its own unique influence of movement. The difference, however, is in how they are performed. Interestingly, these three major styles still perform the basic blocks and attacks, although the stances are different. These moves are your basic upper block, lower block, and side block techniques.

Below, let’s have a look at the basics of each style and how they compare. There are so many similarities between styles, however, there are also several different, carefully selected, influences have impacted their techniques. What is most interesting is that each style has developed its own stances. The basic steps of karate revolve around blocks (uke), punches (tsuki), kicks (giri), and stances (daci). Each style has their own version of techniques and today we cover the basics in three styles (Shito Ryu, Shotokan & Goju Ryu) in order to help you see which one suits you best!
